Johannes originally worked at Point Cloates as a Mate on one of the Chasers. Johannes was a friend of Fred Edmunds, and when Charlie Westerberg came to research whaling, Charlie got both Fred and Johannes interested in whaling in Albany.
Johannes was the Skipper of the first chaser the Cheynes, which was owned by the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company. Johannes immigrated from Norway and had 25 years of whaling experience.
