Wally Danielczuc
Job Description
Labourer on Whale Cookers
Period
1954 - 1956
Wally was born in Poland in 1920. He came to Australia in the 1950's with his wife Kara and thier young son Paul who was born in Germany. Another son Darin was born in Australia nine years after Paul.
Wally lived in the single men's quarters at the station and came home every couple of weeks. Paul can remember coming out to the station to visit his father with his mother and brother in a taxi for the day just so they could occasionally see thier father. Paul remembers that coming out to the station was like another world, completly cut off from town and very different with the smells and the sounds.
He can remember the Mess as the Cook would feed them and look after them. Wally was a keen fisherman and spent many hours around the station in his spare time fishing. He was a brilliant accordian player and also played the violin, all which he picked up by ear, he was unable to read music.
Wally died of a heart attack in 1978 at the age of 56.
Some names remembered by Paul from that time who were freinds of his father were Tom HItchcock, Robert Wals, Cor Wals and Wasil Gradinaru. Ross Edmunds worked with Wally and Geoff Preston was the Electrician who kept everything going when it broke down.
