Len started as a deck boy onboard “SS Cheynes II” on 18th August 1966 (four days prior to his 17th birthday). On reaching 18 years of age he was promoted to deckhand on the Cheynes II.
On the second of February 1970 he was a member of the delivery crew of the “Wilfrid Fearnhead” now Cheynes IV from Durban, South Africa arriving in Albany on 19th February 1970.
On 10th December 1971 Len was promoted to Second Mate on Cheynes IV.
In 1972 was promoted to Sonar Operator on Cheynes IV.
In October 1977 was promoted to Master-Gunner, relieving between the three vessels – week about, until the closure of operations in 1978.
