Barry was Chief Engineer on Cheynes IV. Incidents remembered are:
Cheynes IV’s Third Engineer died on watch at sea. He was discovered sitting in the engine room chair by Barry who thought he was asleep and went to wake him up discovering he was dead. He had a bump on the head, which was thought to be caused by the main engine. Barry thinks his first name was Trevor and that he left a wife and about six children. It happened in about 1974-75.
Cheynes IV stayed out overnight once for a trial on giant squid fishing to see if it was feasible (same squid Sperm whales ate)
Governor of W.A taken out whaling for the day – time unknown.
Quite a few “God’s Garbage” bikie members were employed each season as deckies or firemen.
