Michael John Stubbs was born in Albany in January 1941 to Ches and Mavis Stubbs. After the death of his mother he spent his childhood at Frenchman Bay in the care of his grandparents. On leaving school Mick completed a mechanics apprenticeship at Manley’s Garage in Albany.  

In 1961 he was employed as a deckhand with the Nor’West Whaling Company at Carnarvon where he remained until whaling operations there closed at the end of 1962.

 

The following year Mick took on a job with the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company in Albany, working briefly on the deck and then as 3rd engineer on the chaser Cheynes III, where his father, Ches was Skipper. At the end of the 1965 whaling season Mick left the company and spent the next two years involved in prawning and fishing.

 

In 1967 he gained a position as deckhand on the Cheynes III and worked his way up the ranks. He was mate on this ship for three years prior to the closure of the company’s operations in 1978.
