Ewegenies "Ging" Udecz
Job Description
Flenser
Period
1952 - 1978
Ewgenies (fondly known as Ging) was born in Ukraine and came to Australia on a resettlement program – working on the railway at Kalgoorlie and then on the Elleker drains in Albany, Western Australia.
After finishing the Elleker drains he worked for Hunts Cannery, from there went to work for Cheynes Beach Whaling Company.
Ging worked on a contract on the off-season, cleaning out boilers and sanding them. During the whaling season he tendered for the contract of flenser and did this each year, from 12/11/58 to 1977.
One day when whales were being pulled up to the flensing deck, one of the cables broke and a thin piece of wire hit Ging in the face. He subsequently had about sixteen stitches in his face and was back at work the next day.
