The Fairy

The 70 ton Schooner the Fairy went through the initial stages of construction on the bank of the Kalgan River at Oyster Harbour, Albany Western Australia. It was built by a local ship owner, Captain Thomas Symers. The Fairy was his third vessel that he had built.

She was a fair sized vessel, but not a large ship. The construction commenced in early 1844 but the vessel was still not completed by the end of 1849. Captain Symers took on several partners in the project due to his own financial difficulties, but the partnerships failed due to arguments over the rigging of the Fairy.

Near completion the vessel was brought into Princess Royal Harbour in 1850, a complication or argument regarding a deal between one of the partners, Dunn and Captain Thomas resulted in the work to come to a halt. The Fairy was anchored off York Street when her rope was cut and was left to drift on to a bank and broke her back. The Fairy was allowed to rot at the eastern end of the Harbour in shallow waters where it remains today.
