Whales of the Great Southern Region Western Australia

Albany is well known for its spectacular and dramatic coastlines, these waters of the Great Southern are a perfect sanctuary for breeding and calving for whales upon their migratory journey.

The King George Sound is an exceptional expanse of water protected by headlands, providing a calming, resting area in the warmer waters. Whales give birth and rear their young off the shores of these coastlines before they return back to their feeding grounds in the Antarctic.

The main species of whales you will see in these waters are the Humpback Whale and Southern Right Whales as well as an abundance of other marine life such as the Common Dolphins, Seals and on rare occasions you may see a Pygmy Blue Whale or a Blue Whale.

The Migratory Patterns for these whales are shown in the diagram below. They embark on an extensive journey from their feeding grounds in the Antarctic to the protected waters off the Coast of Australia and New Zealand for breeding. Humpbacks travel as far as Broome in Western Australia, Cairns in Queensland and some as far north as the South Pacific Islands.
